Digging Dinosaurs

We've been exploring a number of inquiries involving DINOSAURS over the last couple of weeks. The children have been reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction books about these prehistoric creatures. [Hey Mom & Dad, ask me why many non-fiction books have a 'Table of Contents'.]
We've been putting our new-found knowledge to further use in order to really get a grasp on these fascinating animals. Some of our learning activities had us:
  • measuring and comparing the height of a variety of dinosaurs. [Which one was bigger-a velociraptor or a brachiosaurus?]
  • creating a new class book (non-fiction to boot!) with loads of information about different dinosaurs including some adaptations some dinosaurs made. [Why did so many plant eater dinosaurs have long necks? Why did the meat-eaters have sharp teeth? Why did the ankylosaurus have a club on its tail?]
  • expanding our vocabulary immensely (both in English and French) [many dinosaurs have REALLY long names. And do you know what an herbivore or a carnivore is? How many horns did a TRIceratops have?]
  • practicing our cooperative play skills while playing with the miniature models
  • using our imagination and creativity to turn simple handprints into a wide range of dinosaurs in a bunch of different 'habitats'
  • being 'Archeologists' discovering dinosaur fossils in our sensory bin
  • developing our spatial awareness while constructing dinosaur puzzles
  • sharing (and cementing) our own expertise/knowledge about dinosaurs with other friends (some of us are REAL experts, you know!)
Here are a couple pics highlighting a few of our explorations:

As we wrap up 'Jurassic World', we thought we'd take an opportunity to surprise the children with some new friends (of the non-human variety). These creatures-who do not walk on two legs, nor four legs, BUT TEN LEGS!!-will be visiting our classroom tomorrow as a provocation to new possible inquiries. Boys and girls, can you guess what will be here waiting for you in the classroom?
We can't wait for you to find out!
See you bright and early in the morning!!
