All Aboard!

With the March break already behind us and the glorious weather upon us, the children have been inspired by the change in weather and have been working to make their way to the beach.  They are excited to be playing with planes, trains and automobiles, and they are dreaming of traveling anywhere from Ottawa to Florida to Hawaii.

Travel. What a great, big wonderful opportunity for learning. Airports and train stations continue to be designed, airplane tickets printed and  passports are nearly complete, etc.  Some areas of study that will be of interest include:
  • some basic geography as we explore the world map
  • math/measurement - passport info (height, weight, age); money used to travel
  • transportation vehicles
  • weather forecasts
  • organization skills: making lists to plan/what to bring
You are invited to send in a favorite vacation photo (or copy of) for children to share with their peers and for us all to locate on our world map.

If you have any items that you feel might add some fun to our centres (ie. pilot cap/train conductor hat, etc.) we would love to borrow them.

Some related French vocabulary words will be sent home this week.

"Celebrate Sport" Day!

On Tuesday, March 27th,  the children are invited to wear a sport-related shirt/jersey (ie. Timbits soccer jersey; tball jersey, or Sens jersey, etc.)  to celebrate sport. We will be learning about the multiple benefits of sport on a personal and community level. On this day, our school will officially be joining the True Sport movement - a vehicle that promotes healthy sport values for quality sport in our communities. For more information, go to http://www.truesportpur.ca/en/home.

A Few Housekeeping Items:

A few of our little ones are missing their quiet time blankets. Please return them to school at your earliest convenience.

The warm sunny weather has us already thinking about sunscreen. We encourage you to apply sunscreen at the beginning of the day and send your child to school with a hat.

While the snow has disappeared, children are still required to have indoor (gym floor friendly) and outdoor shoes (velcro).

Learning Fun:

Next week, the SK children will be starting up with our Snuggle Up and Read Program.
Every Monday, your child will bring home a book for reading practice. We ask that you kindly return the book by the Thursday of the same week. A new book will be sent home the following week.

As well, our little JK friends will soon receive a Popcorn Words mini-kit to help them practise high frequency sight words that are often found in their reading.

Finally, all children will have the opportunity to practise a variety of Math skills by using an online interactive program called "DREAMBOX". The children have been learning how to interact with this program at school. You will be receiving the necessary information (password and instructions) next week.

Wish List

As the year is flying by, there are a few items that we could use/have run out of, in the class. If you are interested, we would appreciate the following items:
  1. boxes of tissues
  2. gently used costumes for the drama centre
  3. bingo dabbers
  4.  yoga mats
  5. dry erase markers

Happy Spring!
