Ash Wednesday

Today, the children participated in discussion about the meaning of lent and Ash Wednesday.  We explained that lent is the 40 days before Easter in which we take time to get our hearts ready to celebrate Easter (a bit like the way we got our hearts ready before Christmas, during Advent).

One way that the children are invited to get their hearts ready and help others during lent is through an exciting school-wide initiative that will support CHF (formerly the Canadian Hunger Foundation).

The children are encouraged to bring in small donations (throughout lent) that they earn through kind deeds/jobs (ie. 0.25) in order to purchase things such as seeds, livestock or water wells in developing countries. Students will be made aware that all items are necessary for the effective sustainability of a village and that their efforts/contributions can really help to make the world a better place. Stay tuned for an upcoming flash alert from Mrs. Hill that will explain this initiative more fully.

Making world connections

This morning the class had the opportunity to sit in on a Skype video call from across the globe.  Mr. Aaron Baillie (Liam's daddy) kindly offered to give us a glimpse of life in India! We arranged to call him at 10:00am this morning ( 8:30pm India time). The children were thrilled to see the nightime sky in India while they were sitting here on the carpet in daylight.

Here are some interesting quotes from our experience:

"How long did it take to get to India?"

"It's daytime on this side (of the world) but nighttime on the other side."

"On India it's dark right now?????"   "Wow, it's really dark".

"You need a passport to go on a plane to India"

"WHAT did you do on the plane for 16 HOURS?

"Did you get to ride a camel?"

"Why were there monkeys on the side of the road?"

We'd like to thank Mr.Baillie for providing such a wonderful learning opportunity for our class!

Valentine's Day is almost here.

Shhh...it's a secret!  We are looking forward to tomorrow when the children will be exchanging valentines with their friends. They will also be revealing special and personal messages that they have written for their secret valentines.

Sweet regards,
Mme. Christine & Miss Riley
